We’re fans of all things Alabama (and all things barbecue, for that matter)—so we were thrilled to get to collaborate with the Alabama Tourism Department to create this poster commemorating The Year of Alabama Barbecue.

To make these special posters we went old-school, cutting out the letterpress plate by hand and then letterpressing it on our 1907 Miehle.

From artwork, to plate making, to printing, to die cutting, letterpress is a unique process that requires time and care—but it’s well worth the extra effort, as we think you’ll agree. To give you an idea of what goes into each letterpressed piece we create, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the printing process.

Plywood needed two different pieces: an invitation and a thank you card, both inspired by the event’s theme, “See Unseen,” and incorporating the event artwork by Atlanta-based artist Kevin Byrd.

We incorporated Kevin’s geometrical design as a pattern across the front of each card, creating an eye-catching texture when letterpressed. On the thank you card we used a reversed out method to make the theme statement appear raised. We printed both cards on a bright, fluorescent white Crane & Co. 100% cotton paper, to enhance the modern, clean feel of the artwork.

We so enjoyed collaborating with Plywood People and Kevin Byrd to create these unique pieces—it was truly our pleasure to design and print these letterpressed cards and invitations for Plywood Presents.

Our team had a great time at this year’s Plywood Presents and we left inspired and energized as we always do!
